W.H.M.I.S.
Training
WHMIS: Generic And Workplace-Specific
Subject to the amounts and varieties of hazardous substances being used and the manner in which they are used (risk of exposure), the time frame for the course could be as long as 8 or more hours with a maximum of 16 participants (being trained for their first time). Fewer participants (or reduced risk of exposure - due to methods or a smaller variety of substances) results in shorter discussion periods and therefore less time (to a minimum time frame of 1.5 to 2 hours).
COURSE CONTENTS: Generic Portion:
- Development of WHMIS Legislation, Background and Definitions;
- Legislated requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for Industrial Establishments, as related to WHMIS:
a. Employer's responsibilities
b. Supplier's responsibilities
c. Employee's rights & responsibilities
- Requirements for workplace worker training
- Toxicology
- Hazard recognition
- Hazard assessment
- Hazard Control
- Labels/Hazard Symbols
a. WHMIS (Workshop)
b. Consumer Products (Workshop)
- MSDS
a. Contents
b. Interpretation of MSDS contents (Workshop)
Workplace-Specific Portion:
We recommend that at least 65% of classroom time be taken to cover items # 8 & 9, as they represent the most critical WHMIS elements.
Workplace-specific contents and areas of concern to be addressed would be finalized with the Joint Health & Safety Committee OR Worker safety Representative. We recommend that each participant be supplied with copies of MSDSs for the two most commonly used hazardous materials. These copies would be used during the MSDS workshop, to enable the participant to understand how to obtain critical information for safe use of the product/s specific to their work area.
Generic Portion:
Items 1 through 3 can be covered within 15% of classroom time. Items 4 through 7 can be covered within 20% of classroom time.
Course length: 1.5 hours to 8 hours
WHMIS Train-The-Trainer
Instruction
Employee turnover can make WHMIS Certification an expensive
compliance process. We can train designated employees to
be in-house WHMIS trainers.
Course length: 2-4 days

Confined
Space Entry Theory
Recognizing what an enclosed or confined space is, and knowing how to make it safe for entry, are two key lessons of this seminar.

How to identify an enclosed or confined space, according to existing and proposed H&S Regulations ( O.Reg 632/05 expected to be enforced as of September 30, 2006 )
How to identify the hazards of a confined space
What procedures are required for working safely in a confined area and be in compliance with the new Regulations
The importance and value of a work permit system
Why it is essential to continually monitor a confined space
When to conduct lockout
Review the new proposed Confined Space Regulations
Course length: 2.5- 3.0 hours

Confined Space Rescue (Requires Theory Session as a pre-requisite)
*(depending on number of spaces reviewed)
This will be a hands-on, practical session, during which the participants will carry out a review (perform actual entries) of the various confined spaces within workplace and evaluate the inherent risks/related hazards. The purpose will be to identify and develop the required rescue procedures for each confined space.
This session may be combined with the Theory session.
Course length: 2.5- 8.0 hours
